Newton’s first Law of Librarians: Pushing the Libraries to the future
Newton’s First Law of Motion: “A body at rest remains at rest unless acted upon by an outside force”. Said another way, we tend to do things the way we’ve always done them. This makes change very hard. Information doesn’t sit still, so why should librarians? And once a librarian is in motion, should he stay in motion?
This can be answered by experimenting with different models of service delivery. In addition to the traditional approach—sitting at the reference desk—the librarians are providing on-call and “roving” reference services. Their goal is to see which method best meets the information needs of users.
